distance / exclusion
it was in english, interestingly . and it appeared to me that the khatib simply ran through the words; the only words stressed were probably ones he'd heard before. in other words, the arabic words. despite the unconvincing delivery, i was pleasantly surprised at how well put together this week's khutbah was. it curiously sounded like a thesis paper on tauhid.
i still don't agree with it, but at least it's something to think about.
how are muslims to reconcile living amongst the rest of the world when we say anyone who 'practices secularism' is wrong? for one, secularism isn't necessarily a thing that one 'practices'. people are much more complex than being just religious or just secular.
when we say salvation only comes to those who are one with god, are we implying that the people who suffer deserves to be refused of salvation ? that the cries of these children do not matter?
when we attack the interfaith commission for promoting the idea that all religion is the same (really? did they?), are we also saying that these other religions are wrong? while we cry syirik to everyone who disagrees, we forget that faith is a personal matter. and people are still dying of war and poverty.
excuses. excuses.
faiz listening to a khutbah? don't ask me why i was there ... it's not like me to pay attention to these kind of things.

I know this may sound like secularism but for me its between me and god. What you believe in. It's in your heart. And yes i'm muslim.
I believe in Islam, which is why I don't believe that other faiths are wrong and whatever you do will be between you and god.
And maybe you being at a khutbah is a beginning of something. Or God just meant for you to be there to hear a particular message that may make a difference in your life.
Who knows? :)
"And maybe you being at a khutbah is a beginning of something."
it's the beginning of something alright ... like a detachment. now that's a strong statement but whatever. sure it's more interesting than listening to some khatib saying "jagalah kebersihan untuk mengelakkan diri daripada wabak denggi" but it's not enough to sustain my waning interest.
i'm not associating myself in this.
or rather, i'm disassociating myself from this. like you said, it's "between you(me) and god". a personal matter.
interestingly, I too just recently found out the khutbah at klcc's mosque is in english. perhaps it's just me, but it gives more ring to it, don't you think? :)
in my (very) humble opinion, religion, faith and beliefs ARE, no doubt, personal matters, but as a muslim, when you question Islam, you question your own position as a muslim. That is, of course, if you consider yourself as muslim.(?)
and for starters, I never agreed with those who claim salvation comes to those who are one with god. I thought we've established God(s) (for all religions) are/is fair? :)
but then again, this is my faith and my beliefs. I guess it is, in the end, a personal matter/choice/opinion.
I say, -listen to more khutbahs. That's probably when you'll realise where you stand, faith-wise.
thats a whole lot of ():)//
no comment on this one, im not wholly religious, but i know i am spiritual.

The eyes can't see what the mind doesn't know..
so, are u saying that u don't really perform friday prayers that often?
i'm not judging. i just want to say that when you're all alone, when your family's not there, when everything seems to go against you, when you're extremely in despair, at least you know there's god watching you and taking care of you.
if not for my belief in god, i would have hung myself in the bathroom a long time ago.
the manner in which i wrote led you to asumme a whole lot on whether i believe in god / religious / a muslim / etc. the post isn't about me. i'll leave the personal questions open to the imagination. frankly, it doesn't matter.
all i can say is
there is irony and denial in disbelief
and delusion and blindness in faith
of course.
we're talking imperfection here, aren't we?

Funny you should post about this. I just re-watched Kingdom Of Heaven, which I realized had a few points to ponder.
This quote jumped out at me:
"I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What god desires is here
[points to head]... and here
[points to heart] and what you decide to do every day, you will be a good man - or not."
I leave it up to each to take it as they will.
