malaysia turns fortyfour today
if i had one wish, one thing i could do for the country ... it's to rid our universities of (the unconstitutional) AUKU. wishful, i know. something is clearly amiss when our local graduates don't have a mind if their own. i imagine things were a lot dandier in the sixties. comparing old graduates to new ones ... to put it crudely, we're cultivating ourselves to embrace stupidity.

"If you follow a certain religion, like you are a member of a certain club, you are subjected to certain rules. When you want to get out from that club, then you must make sure you follow that rule in getting out of it." - syed hamid albar, on converts.

it's quite appalling when we realise just how little foreign societies know of us;yet still have the power to cast suspicions that can influence the large. but the thing is, they are aware of our internal problems, the increasingly divided society which is already affecting the nation, but we seem to be in much denial at acknowledging these issues.
in retrospect, i think syed hamid did well at drawing a straight line at defending (our) country, but the fact remains the problem is THERE and regretfully, not much has been done to truly fix it. we tend to sweep under the carpet rather than fight the problem head on.
personally, i worry what malaysia is to become if cultural and religious dissatisfactions intensify among more non-bumis. 50 years from now, we might not focus anymore on protecting our country from the danger of foreign powers, instead we might well battle to save the essence of what makes us who we are before it consumes us whole.
btw, i love this entry. i link okay?
unrelated, but thank you for loving my place. :)

actually, i just thought about this while driving. malaysia's 44 years old.. haha. got really fixted on the number 50
i dont think he handled it well at all. granted, we've made some questionable decisions, meaning he does not have much to work around with, but he coul've at least been wittier. that's the thing about dr m, like him or dislike him, he believes in his policies. syed hamid comes across as dry, unfunny and defensive.

i totally agree with u faiz. he comes off as being defensive and unable to respond to the issues being thrown at him. it's a pity how he couldn't justify the nature of the policies that govern Msia.
if the interview goes on any longer, he might just have an outburst.
i bet if he watch the whole thing again, he'll be pretty embarrassed. i wonder what the whole cabinet will say about the interview.
and btw, do get the shoe. it's damn nice!
anonymous: you're very much welcomed.
oh, i can't find them shoes anywhere. sigh.
