let me first stress that this space is not about politics.
many other blogs strive on the gullibility of 'the people', feeding them questionable content and so called 'facts'; going through such great lengths to prove that the mainstream media is indeed tricking us. let me also stress that i am no expert. unlike so many, from the mainstream as well as the left, that pretend to know, quoting questionable internet articles as opposed to official reports.
whatever happened to the ethics of journalism?
i don't usually bother with blogs such as jeff ooi and bumiputera malaysia and countless others left and right-wing propaganda. however, it does bother me that malaysians consume these co-called news articles so readily.
it is extremely frustrating for a sane, objective person to obtain unvarnished data in which he/her would draw a personal conclusion from.
let me demonstrate:
according to the anonymous 'Rakyat' from Bumiputera Malaysia , the government is lying when they announced that data for our FDI. After all, us$5.7 billion (according to Rafidah Aziz) and us$4.0 billion (according to the UNCTAD) is a huge difference. But of course, the ever ethical journalist-wannabe failed to even notice the glaring discrepancies. Case in point : Rafidah's numbers were for 2006. The UN report was for 2005, and the numbers referred only to the 'Inward FDI' and excludes 'Outward FDI'. And while browsing through the 366-page report I found no evidence that the UNCTAD 'has cast doubt over the actual amount of foreign direct investment into Malaysia'. That last sentence of the paragraph ('Malaysia actually suffered a negative FDI growth in 2006.') only proved to show how stupid and irresponsible 'Rakyat' is.
let me also stress that i am certainly NOT an expert in economy. the fact is i know virtually nothing about it. but i won't be taken for a fool.
moral of the story : forget politics. the next post will be completely different from this. indulgence and vanity is the way to go! let them eat cake!
to rafidah aziz : you owe me. and next time please don't say 'if you can't accept our policies, then we don't want your investments' to potential foreign investors. and that chanel handbag looks a little outdated. logo-a-go-gos are a no go. but do come to melbourne again!

The International Trade and Industry Minister Rafidah Aziz recently announced that the total foreign direct investments (FDI) for Malaysia in 2006 was a record at RM20.2 billion (about US$5.7 billlion). Malaysia's FDI figures dropped from US$4.6 billion in 2004 to US$4.0 billion in 2005.
And once again, the truth has prevailed. When you think about it, the Malaysian media is not as "free" as it should be; there are still a lot of laws in place that make complete freedom of speech illegal. Which in turn breeds these so-called bastions of "free speech" on the internet, where people go to vent and gripe about the way the country is run in general.
Since there are no "watchdog" protocols in place so people can say/post whatever they like, facts don't get checked the way a professional journalist's is supposed to be. Do you see what I'm getting at?
I know lots of people say ethics and journalism can't go in the same sentence, but in this day and age everybody has an opinion and thanks to the new media (electronic, internet, etc) anybody can say anything. As a journalism student I've heard the "journalists-are-scum-of-the-earth" line all too many times, but I ask you: Is what you are reading true journalism, bound by our professional code of ethics, or is it just some soapbox that the multitude can stand up on and sing to their hearts' content?

natasha : a agree with you that in terms of freedom of expression, we're not in a good place. heck, another local film was just banned. maybe that is why people go a little overboard when given a chance to express themselves thru the internet. they probably don't deserve the title journalist, but they do act like they are one, like what they say holds some validity.
i'm not so much pissed with the articles but rather how people are taking it so easily.
i love arts in general. and i do have respect for journalists (some of them at least). hey, i know you'll make a good one.
