on acquiring things

our house had not change for the past four years. the furnitures now acquired a permanence that halts any form of visual stimulation. stuff accumulates. old things gather dust and new things pile up. magazines, books, paper, junk, everywhere. dated colors, so-so furnitures, and the oddly shaped living room.

i was asked by my parents to, uh, redecorate. for the lack of a better word. the budget : next to nothing ( well okay, it's RM10k .. but a light fixture could cost that much). to work within these restrictions, and a few others, i would need to retain pretty much all the furniture. i probably won't be getting those sexy phillip starck ghost chairs and pretty black chandeliers.

i needed a strategy. and a new color scheme. as far as new acquisitions go: monochrome is the way to go. things are to be radically rearranged. and more storage space is needed. and my dad needs a work space.

so i went where all those with tight budgets would go to; the place where design is democratised and coke is cheap and refillable; the place that attracts everyone, from grandmothers on wheelchairs to little children and the ocassional mats and minahs rempits; yes, i am talking about ikea.

i've done my first round of shopping today. today is a public holiday. the place is total chaos. thanks to weeks of researching, i cleared the place in 80 minutes. i try to not to concentrate on the looks people gave me when i tried pulling a shelving unit three times my size into the trolley.

i've also been toying around the idea of buying art for a couple of years now. being a nobody in the malaysian art scene, i haven't the slightest idea of where to look for good art. and unfortunately i only seem to like things that i can't afford to acquire.

until i find something that i love (and does not cost an arm and leg), i am thinking of printing massive versions some of my own works. both photography and architecture. like the ones below.

i ramble a lot today. sorry.

Wow you get to deco the whole house? How cool is that.. I've always had this thing about ID but never got to pursuing it. I think Ikea has really nice stuffs.

Your works are awesome, but of course that's nothing new. Good luck! ;)

this time, i'm only doing the living room, and the TV room upstairs. nothing fancy schmancy. so far they seem to be liking it.

ikea is not bad actually. we're not posh elitists or anything, so it doesn't really matter that we own a lot of ikea shit that thousands of people probably have too. and it's really cheap and only five minutes away.

video klip? haha, thanks. wished i could do videos though. nak beli SLR pun still kena fikir seratus kali. belum beli lagi pun. sigh.

we bought the coolest study table from ikea, with a small frosted glass panel that turns into a light-box as we shine a light from underneath. tracing is fun.
